Is PMI-ACP Worth It in 2027? Value, Cost and Who Needs It
The PMI-ACP is worth it if you lead or work in agile delivery and the roles you want mention agile credentials. The uncomfortable part is that no public, verified survey proves a salary premium, so the case rests on evidence you can check yourself.
Quick Answer: The PMI-ACP validates agile experience across approaches such as Scrum, Lean and Kanban, and PMI describes the exam as agnostic, experience-based and ISO-accredited. PMI reports that 86% of holders qualified for new opportunities and 84% gained recognition for career advancement, but its page does not give the sample or the date. No verified public salary data exists for the credential. Cost is reported at roughly $745 to $3,150 all in. It makes the most sense for project managers, product owners, coaches and team leads in agile or hybrid environments, and for PMP holders who deliver agile work. It makes less sense for people who need only a basic Scrum credential or whose employers do not ask for agile certification.
Planning for 2027: the figures and rules in this guide are the latest we could verify in October 2026, and they are the ones in effect as you head into 2027. We will refresh it when PMI, PayScale or other sources publish new data.
What Is the PMI-ACP and What Does It Prove?
The PMI Agile Certified Practitioner is PMI's certification for agile practitioners. According to PMI's own page, it validates agile experience and expertise across methodologies such as Scrum, Lean and Kanban. PMI describes it as agnostic, experience-based and ISO-accredited, and lists roles that fit it: product owner, Scrum Master, agile team lead, developer, project manager, agile coach and product manager.
That experience requirement is the credential's main distinguishing feature. You cannot earn it by attending a course alone. You need one of four experience routes, 21 hours of formal agile training and a pass on the exam.

Our guide to the PMI-ACP certification covers the credential in more depth, and we explain
how it fits if you already hold the PMP.
Why Does Agile Matter So Much Going Into 2027?
The case for the PMI-ACP starts with the work, not the credential.
- The PMP itself leans agile. The current PMP exam outline reflects about 60% agile and hybrid content and about 40% predictive. If the flagship project management exam tests agile that heavily, agile fluency is no longer a specialty.
- Most organizations use some agile. Digital.ai's 18th State of Agile report, as summarized by a PMI-affiliated study site, found that 74% of organizations use agile or hybrid agile approaches. We did not review the original report, so treat the figure as indicative.
- Hybrid is common. Many teams combine predictive structure with agile delivery, which means project managers need both vocabularies.
Where agile is the norm, the question becomes how to show you are credible in it. That is the gap the PMI-ACP is designed to fill.
For how the PMP treats agile, see our guide to predictive, agile and hybrid on the current PMP exam.
What Does PMI Say Holders Gain?
PMI's PMI-ACP page reports two figures: 86% of holders qualified for new opportunities, and 84% gained recognition for career advancement. These are PMI's own numbers, and the page does not state the sample size, the survey date or how holders were asked. They are useful as a sign of how holders see the credential, but they are not proof that it caused those outcomes.
The page also says demand for agile practitioners is soaring, without giving figures, and it contains no salary information.
Does the PMI-ACP Raise Your Salary?
This is the question most people care about, and the honest answer is that nobody can prove it from public data.
- PMI's Earning Power salary survey publishes headline figures for the PMP: a US median of $135,000 against $109,157 for non-certified respondents in the 14th edition. We did not find a verified, public PMI-ACP figure in the same survey.
- Provider blogs report PMI-ACP averages from about $100,000 to $130,000. They cite job-site data without a date, a sample size or a method, and some come from companies that sell PMI-ACP training.
- Some ROI guides promise payback in two to six months, but their own arithmetic does not always reconcile, so be careful with confident numbers.
What can you do instead? Run your own test using the roles you want.
An hour of this tells you more about your own market than any national average.
What Does the PMI-ACP Cost, and When Does It Pay Back?
Costs are reported by providers and cost guides, and PMI does not list the ACP exam fee publicly. Our PMI-ACP cost guide [add hyperlink] gives the full breakdown. In summary:
- Exam fee reported at $435 for PMI members and $495 for non-members.
- 21 hours of agile training: about $200 to $600 self-paced, about $800 to $2,500 instructor-led.
- Practice questions: about $50 to $150.
- All-in budgets from about $745 to $3,150 as a non-member.
The payback depends on a raise or a better offer, which nobody can promise. This table shows the arithmetic for different assumptions, so you can find your own row.
|
Total cost |
If the credential adds $2,000 a year |
If it adds $5,000 a year |
|
$745 |
4.5 months |
1.8 months |
|
$1,245 |
7.5 months |
3.0 months |
|
$3,145 |
18.9 months |
7.5 months |
Payback months = total cost x 12 / annual gain
745 x 12 / 2,000 = 4.5 months 745 x 12 / 5,000 = 1.8 months
1,245 x 12 / 2,000 = 7.5 months 1,245 x 12 / 5,000 = 3.0 months
3,145 x 12 / 2,000 = 18.9 months 3,145 x 12 / 5,000 = 7.5 months
The gains in the table are hypothetical, not forecasts. If the credential adds nothing to your pay, the value is in access to roles and credibility with clients, and you should weigh that honestly against the cost.
PMI-ACP vs PMP vs CSM vs PSM: How Do They Differ?
People often compare agile credentials as if they were interchangeable. They are built for different purposes.

Best for |
Practitioners who want broad, experience-based agile proof |
Project managers leading delivery in any approach |
People who want a fast, Scrum-specific entry credential |
|
Signal to employers |
Experience plus knowledge across agile approaches |
Broad delivery capability and recognized standard |
Familiarity with Scrum |
We describe the Scrum credentials only in broad terms. Check each issuer's current requirements, because they change. The practical point is that the PMI-ACP and the Scrum credentials answer different hiring needs, and the best choice depends on what your target employers name.
Who Should Get the PMI-ACP?
|
Your situation |
Is the PMI-ACP a good fit? |
|
Project manager moving into agile or hybrid delivery |
Strong fit, especially if you have two years of agile experience |
|
PMP holder who delivers agile projects |
Good fit. The PMP counts as an experience route, and the credential shows agile depth |
|
Product owner or product manager |
Good fit if you want an experience-based credential across approaches |
|
Scrum Master or agile coach wanting broader credibility |
Good fit. It covers more than Scrum alone |
|
Career changer with little agile experience |
Not yet. Build the experience first, or start with a Scrum credential |
|
Someone whose employer never mentions agile credentials |
Check postings first. The credential may add little where it is not valued |
|
Consultant selling agile transformation |
Often a good fit, because clients ask for proof of experience |
Who Should Skip It, or Wait?
- You do not work with agile teams and do not plan to.
- You cannot yet meet an experience route. Build the experience first.
- Your target employers ask only for a Scrum-specific credential.
- The total cost would strain your budget and your employer will not reimburse it.
- You want a general project management credential. The PMP is usually the broader choice.
Skipping is not a failure. A well-timed credential beats one earned too early.
The Value Beyond Salary
- Credibility with clients and stakeholders. An experience-based credential from PMI shows you have done the work.
- Shared vocabulary. The four domains give you a structure for mindset, leadership, product and delivery.
- Hybrid fluency. Knowing agile well makes you better at tailoring on any project.
- Portability. It is the same credential in the US, Canada and elsewhere.
- A learning discipline. Renewing with 30 PDUs every three years keeps your practice current.
A Five-Question Decision Check
If you can answer yes to at least four, the credential is likely worth pursuing. If you answer no to the first or second, wait and gather evidence.
The Four PMI-ACP Domains in Plain English
The exam is built on four domains. The descriptions below are general, so use PMI's current Exam Content Outline for the exact task list.
|
Domain |
Weight |
What it is about in practice |
|
Mindset |
28% |
Agile values and principles, and how a team and an organization think about change, learning and collaboration |
|
Leadership |
25% |
Servant leadership, empowering teams, resolving conflict and coaching people toward self-organization |
|
Product |
19% |
Understanding customer value, shaping and prioritizing the backlog and planning releases around outcomes |
|
Delivery |
28% |
Planning and running iterations, managing risk and flow, and measuring progress with agile metrics |
Notice that Mindset and Leadership together are 53% of the exam. The credential tests how you think and lead in agile settings at least as much as it tests mechanics, which is one reason experience matters.
Our PMI-ACP domains guide [add hyperlink] goes deeper. The weights add up as follows.
28 + 25 + 19 + 28 = 100
Mindset + Leadership = 28 + 25 = 53%
Common Objections, Answered
|
Objection |
A fair answer |
|
Agile is just Scrum, so a broad certification is overkill |
Many teams use Scrum, Kanban, Lean and hybrid practices together. The PMI-ACP covers several approaches, which helps if you work across teams |
|
Experience matters more than a certificate |
Agreed, and the PMI-ACP requires experience. The credential is a way to document and signal it |
|
Employers do not ask for it |
Some do and some do not. Check postings in your region before you invest |
|
It costs too much |
Reported all-in budgets start around $745. Compare that with your realistic gain and ask your employer to reimburse it |
|
I already have the PMP |
The PMP covers agile too, but the PMI-ACP shows deeper, experience-based agile practice. It matters most if you deliver agile work every day |
How to Make the PMI-ACP Pay Off After You Pass
A credential opens a conversation. Your results decide what happens in it.
Common Mistakes When Judging a Certification
- Trusting a provider's salary claim. Check the source, the date and who profits.
- Confusing a survey with a guarantee. Averages describe groups, not you.
- Choosing by price alone. A cheap course that does not meet PMI's 21-hour requirement wastes money.
- Ignoring experience requirements. You cannot apply without them.
- Forgetting renewal. Plan for 30 PDUs every three years.

FAQ
Is the PMI-ACP worth it in 2027?
It is worth it if you lead or work in agile delivery and want experience-based proof that employers and clients recognize, and if the roles you want mention agile credentials. It is less compelling if you only need an entry-level Scrum credential, or if your target employers never ask for one. Check 20 job postings before you decide.
Why is the PMI-ACP important?
It shows you have real agile experience and knowledge across approaches such as Scrum, Lean and Kanban, not only that you attended a course. PMI describes the exam as agnostic, experience-based and ISO-accredited, and agile and hybrid content is about 60% of the current PMP exam outline, which shows how central agile has become.
Does the PMI-ACP increase your salary?
No public, verified survey measures a PMI-ACP salary premium. PMI's Earning Power survey publishes headline figures for the PMP. Provider blogs quote averages of $100,000 to $130,000 for PMI-ACP holders, but they do not disclose their methods, so treat them as rough. Use job postings in your region as evidence.
How much does the PMI-ACP cost?
The exam fee is reported at $435 for PMI members and $495 for non-members, plus 21 hours of agile training. Reported all-in budgets run from about $745 to $3,150. See our PMI-ACP cost guide for the full breakdown.
Is the PMI-ACP harder than the PMP?
They are different. The PMI-ACP exam has 120 questions in 180 minutes and the PMP has 180 questions in 240 minutes. PMI-ACP questions focus on agile mindset, leadership, product and delivery, and require real agile experience to answer well.
Is the PMI-ACP better than CSM or PSM?
It depends on what you need. CSM and PSM are Scrum-focused credentials that do not require work experience, while the PMI-ACP covers several agile approaches and requires experience and 21 hours of training. Look at which credential your target employers name.
Should I get the PMI-ACP if I already have the PMP?
It can make sense if you work in agile or hybrid environments, because the PMP counts as one of the experience routes for the PMI-ACP. You still need the 21 hours of agile training. See our guide on whether you need the PMI-ACP if you already have the PMP.
What are the PMI-ACP eligibility requirements?
A high school diploma or equivalent, 21 hours of formal agile training, and one of four experience routes: two years of agile experience in the past five years, a GAC-accredited degree plus one year, a third-party agile certification plus one year, or holding the PMP.
How many questions are on the PMI-ACP exam?
120 multiple-choice questions in 180 minutes with one 10-minute break. The domains are Mindset 28%, Leadership 25%, Product 19% and Delivery 28%.
How do I keep the PMI-ACP active?
Earn 30 professional development units (PDUs) in each three-year cycle. Check your PMI dashboard for the renewal fee, which depends on membership status and region.
Who should skip the PMI-ACP?
People who do not work with agile teams, who cannot yet meet the experience requirement, or whose target employers do not mention agile credentials. Another option is to gain the experience first and certify later.
Where can I find the price of the Gold Standard Certifications PMI-ACP course?
Please check our website for the current price and batch dates. We are a PMI Authorized Training Partner, and students rate us 4.8 (Excellent) on Trustpilot across 900+ reviews. The PMI exam fee is paid separately to PMI.
Is the PMI-ACP recognized in Canada and the US?
It is the same PMI credential in both countries and in the other countries where PMI operates. Recognition by individual employers varies, so check postings in your region.
Does the PMI-ACP expire?
Yes, it needs renewal every three years with 30 PDUs. Check your PMI dashboard for the renewal fee.
